Daniel Gullotta is a theological student and candidate in the process toward ordination in the Episcopal Church in Australia.  He attended the Common Dreams conference in Melbourne and introduced himself by saying "Hey! We're friends on Facebook!" Which, of course, earned him an instant hug and instant camaraderie!  Daniel's review of my book, With or Without God, was posted on website of The Center for Progressive Christianity in the States.  Here, Daniel reflects on the closing service at the Common Dreams conference.

Beginning June 6th and running for six weeks, we'll be examining the VisionWorks (2009) document that was embraced by the congregation a year ago. Exploring how we interact with ourselves, each other, and the world and how our relationships can be supported, challenged, and enriched by the principles in our VisionWorks (2009) document, we'll engage in conversation here, on our Facebook page, and in person.  Join us as we  wrestle with our ideals and discern how to apply them as a community and as individuals.  Questions will be posted here regularly throughout the next few weeks!

While in Brisbane, I was honoured to give the homily and preside at the Eucharist at St. Mary's in Exile with rebel priest, Peter Kennedy.  Here, Peter Kirkwood of Eureka Street, posts his interview with Kennedy and a reflection on his first year outside the embrace of the Catholic church.

Well, this began as an attempt to chronicle the time Scott and I had spent both in Brisbane and in Auckland, but the time flies by so rapidly and html is so my second language!  So it only reflects the time we spent in Brisbane.  See you all soon!

With Gretta in Australia for the next few weeks, West Hill has lined up some very special guests who will inspire and challenge us on Sundays.

This Sunday, April 11th, join us at our 10:30 am service to hear Trisha Bower.  Many already know Trisha. Before recently returning to full time employment she was program coordinator at West Hill United. Her experiences  are diverse - a worker for homeless youth, a bereavement services coordinator, a family advocate, a Reiki practitioner, a potter/creator/mother/sister/counselor/friend. Trisha will share her feelings and thoughts about the beauty and spirituality of pottery.

Trisha says, "Pottery is more than just beautifully crafted bowls, mugs or vases. It is the embodiment of our life forces. It is from the earth and as we touch it and create with it, it in turn grounds us to the earth and to each other". Don't miss this on April 11th.

Easter at West Hill

Posted by: Dana Wilson-Li in worshipreligionchurch news on

Traditionally, the week leading up to Easter has focused on the stories of Jesus' last week including his crucifixion and resurrection.  Whole segments of the Christian community have taken those stories literally and interpreted them to mean that Jesus' life was offered up as a sacrifice to cleanse us from our sins.

But large segments of the Christian community have interpreted the stories metaphorically, understanding the resurrection as symbolic of our own need for that second chance or the belief that even though our dreams die with us, if they are worthy, they will be lifted up by those who come after us and brought to life.

At West Hill, we choose to touch your dreams, help you acknowledge the challenges you live with because of them, and breathe new life into those, yours and others, that call again and again for new energy to animate them. Join us, and help make the dream live again.
