November 13th 2022: Making Room
Welcoming the stranger; hospitality in a divided world.
Hospitality is an important practice for any community that hopes to help transform the world. When we hear the word hospitality we often think of the hospitality industry or welcoming friends for a nice dinner, but hospitality must be more than that.
You're welcome at any hotel in the country as long as your credit card works. You can invite your friends over for dinner but that's not really hospitality - that’s a nice dinner with friends.
Hospitality includes a risk. It means a welcoming Stranger, the person who is different from you. In fact, the root of the word hospitality comes from the Greek word ‘Hostis”, which is the same root as the word hostile.
This Sunday, we will look at how hospitality might be transformative in a divided world.
