SEPTEMBER 25TH 2022: The Wisdom of the Crowd
This week we will wrap up our Living With Dementia series by seeking the wisdom of the crowd. We will relax and let the community have a conversation about this difficult topic. There will be breakout rooms on zoom and those in the building people will form their own small groups. We are hoping for beautiful conversations on a difficult subject. But we will remember that life is beautiful.
To help us do that, we will have two readings from Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. Alice’s conversations in Wonderland sometimes seem similar to a conversation with someone with dementia. Without attaching too much to the similarity, we hope that these whimsical Wonderland vignettes can create a proper mood for our conversations. In the interests of privacy, we will not be sharing any video or audio from these conversations.
1st Reading: From Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, this reading of Alice in Wonderland takes place just after the start of the Mad Tea Party. Alice’s first encounter with the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, and the Dormouse gets off to a rocky start. Alice finally rebukes the Mad Hatter for his rudeness. His response is a cryptic question that Alice takes as a riddle.
2nd Reading: From Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carrol, the next reading comes from Alice’s encounter with the White Queen. The queen has got her brush tangled up in her hair and can't get it out. Alice helps her release the brush and then tries to fix her hair a little bit. The Queen then tries to hire Alice as her lady's maid wher the conversation devolves into confusing but somehow delightful banter about jam every other day.
