Glittering and gilded, the monarchy has always captivated the world's attention no matter what their activities might be. From Victoria's gaudy memorials to her beloved Albert, through the sweet sisters, Elizabeth and Margaret, beseeching the empire to hold fast in World War II, and Diana beguiling the world far too briefly, we've had a fascination with their royalty. But what might we think of them if they were just folk down the street? And how would that reflect on who we believe ourselves to be?

First Reading

From then Prince Charles’ speech at his investiture as Prince of Wales:

I know that social conditions have changed since 50 years ago and, of course, are still changing. The demands on a Prince of Wales have altered, but I am determined to serve and to try as best I can to live up to those demands, whatever they might be in the rather uncertain future. One thing I am clear about and it is that Wales needs to look forward without forsaking the traditions and essential aspects of her past. The past can be just as much a stimulus to the future as anything else. By the affirmation of your loyalty today for which I express my gratitude, this will not simply be a faint hope.

Second Reading

By Mehmet Murat ildan, contemporary Turkish playwright, novelist and thinker

The real king of the jungle is not the lion, the real king of the jungle is the jungle itself! Being a king is not just about having power! To be a true king means to offer equal beauty and opportunities to all, to protect the subjects with love, just like a forest!

At the end of the readings, we customarily add the phrase: “offered as wisdom for the journey” and we invite you to respond with the phrase: “may we walk in its light”. This is simply an invitation to participate if you wish to do so.
