Inspired by Hollywood - DON'T LOOK UP

Our next movie in our Inspired by Hollywood series is Don’t Look UP, created by Adam McKay.
This Academy Award nominated film is a dark, satirical, comedy about the end of the world. A young scientist discovers a comet, but the excitement of discovering a new celestial body quickly turns to horror when the scientists discover that the 10 km wide comet is headed directly to earth and will cause an end to life as we know it within six months.

The movie follows the story of the scientists trying to get the word out to the world. On the way, they encounter a corrupt American Trump-like President who covers up the existence of the comet until it can no longer be denied. Eventually, the President conspires with a tech billionaire who schemes up a doomed plan to mine the comet for minerals.

The movie examines our willingness to live in denial in the face of an existential threat. It captures the denialism around the looming environmental crisis as well as the questioning of truth we have seen in the pandemic.  There seems to be an idea that facts are up for debate or a mere difference of opinion. We will look closely at the question, “What is Truth”?
