Lend a Hand - Native Learning Centre, East

The Native Learning Centre - East is an alternative high school for First Nations, Metis, and Inuit students ages 15-20 years of age that, in partnership with Native Child and Family Services of Toronto, integrates traditional Native cultural teachings into the day-to-day learning environment. Students work towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma and Breakfast and lunch are provided.

These young people sleep rough. In good weather, they sleep out of doors in bush areas and parks, and in bad weather they couch surf. They have little except what is literally on their back and/or in a backpack.
Members of our Outreach Committee are inviting you to join us in lending a helping hand to these youth. Their Councillor has told us that they like to provide each student coming into the program with a bag of useful items:

Tooth brushes, Tooth paste
Liquid soap/Body wash (not bar soap)
Deodorant, Socks
Board Games ages 12 and up
Non-perishable food such as tinned soups or beans
We have set up a donation box in the lobby for goods brought to the Sunday gathering.

For those that are unable to attend service in person, you may contribute to this project by sending us a cheque made out to West Hill United. Please be sure to mark ‘Indigenous’ on the cheque’s memo line so that it is directed to this special project. We will buy the toiletries and socks etc. with your donations.
The Native Learning Centre also gives each youth a gift of a Cinema card, a $5.00 gift card each for the local pizza store, and coffee shop, and a $10.00 card for the food store that they can walk to from the school. We will buy these cards with your financial support.
Donations are required by the end of April so that we can do the shopping, and sorting and be ready for delivery in May. If you have any questions, please feel free to speak to Ruth Gill or a member of the Outreach Committee following the Sunday gathering.
Thank you for your generous support!
