It is a wonderful way to engage newcomers so don't hesitate to bring your friends to explore and discuss these amazing films.I If possible, watch the movie beforehand, then join us Sunday for the inspiration. If you can't watch the film, don't fret, the message will still be meaningful.
A History of Violence
The third movie we will look at in our Inspired by Hollywood service series is BELFAST ,created by Kenneth Branagh. Belfast is a memoir, a story about Branagh’s youth growing up in Belfast at the beginning of The Troubles. The Troubles (Irish: Na Trioblóidí) were an ethno-nationalist conflict in Northern Ireland that lasted about 30 years. The conflict began in the late 1960s and is usually deemed to have ended with the Good Friday Agreement of 1998. The movie spans from the beginning of the Troubles until Branagh’s family moved to England in search of work and to escape the violence some months later.
The movie doesn't get into the reasons behind the Troubles but the specter of violence is always looming. Of course, the Troubles were connected to a complicated history in Ireland and the UK. If we are going to contemplate the nature of violence, it is helpful to dig into our history. This Sunday we will travel deep into our own history, all the way back to the first murder.
