The news you heard was difficult. The report you read was overwhelmingly negative. The troubling facts you discovered were undeniable. It might have been about the planet, about people in distant countries, people in our own country, people we know personally, or people we love dearly – or you. At any rate, it was bad. This Sunday we will consider the challenge of maintaining not only our mental and emotional balance but our commitment to keep on contributing to the good even though it may feel futile in light of the massive forces in play in the world. The key idea in the readings, the songs, and the discussion will be that of “worth”, and how it relates to how we face difficult news, find more ways to care, and seek out and celebrate the beauty in the natural and human world. On our own and together.
